30/04/2012- 2 Day Competition Events are underway
Mars stormed ahead in Watford with an impressive 15.63% ROI lead after the first 2 Day Competition event. Competing with Tesco Direct, General Mills and Kimberly-Clark, the confectioner managed to fight off tough opposition. Tesco Direct and General Mills both put on a good show, with the former taking an early lead and the latter achieving a remarkable turnaround throughout the event. Kimberly-Clark held the top position throughout the majority of the 6 competition rounds, but was pipped at the post by ex-2011 winners Mars.
In Birmingham, we saw the ‘Professionals vs. Academics’ showdown, where Computacenter took on Aston University. An intense atmosphere hung in the air as the teams battled over supply chain strategy supremacy and Fresh Connection leadership. Computacenter eventually claimed the winning title and finished on 0.07% placing them 4th in the overall UK rankings.
Unilever stormed ahead of the Fresh Connection Competition in the Manchester event. The world leading supplier of fast-moving consumer goods competed against British supermarket retailers in the training and development programme last week. Battling over supply chain strategy supremacy, Unilever came on top with a 2.78% ROI lead, placing them 4th in the overall competition.

19/12/11- Young Fresh Connection Kicks Off
SCALA Consulting piloted an interactive workshop at the University of Huddersfield last Friday with students from Rastrick High School. In a day long programme, SCALA introduced the supply chain and logistics industry to the young people through its innovative scheme: Young Fresh Connection.
Rastrick School’s students, who study a supply chain module as part of their BTEC L3 Business Studies course, were engaged in an online simulation battle to turn around the fortunes of a struggling fruit juice manufacturer by the name of The Fresh Connection.
SCALA, a leading UK logistics and supply chain consultancy company based in the Media Centre Huddersfield, developed the programme in response to concerns that the industry is expressing a shortfall of young supply chain professionals.
SCALA is linked to and supported by the Learning CIC, a not-for-profit organisation who work with schools across Yorkshire providing “out of school” learning programmes.
John Perry, SCALA’s MD stated: “UK youth unemployment is at a record high and there are some world class career opportunities in the supply chain industry. We need to raise the profile of supply chain and logistics in the UK and let young people know of all the exciting prospects that are out there.”
The University of Huddersfield has a well established reputation for delivering outstanding graduates into the market through its Logistics and Supply Chain degrees and was keen to be involved in any initiative which spreads the word.
Nick Hubbard, Head of Division of Logistics Transport & Tourism at the University of Huddersfield stated: "There are marvellous career opportunities for qualified logistics graduates across the world. Those youngsters involved in the Fresh Connection game today were able to clearly identify whether logistics and supply chain management suits their own career aspirations and it was fantastic to see how motivated they were. I hope that many will take advantage of the courses which we offer at the University of Huddersfield to assist them in fulfilling their potential.”
The Young Fresh Connection workshop with Rastrick School was a great success, and attracted warm praise from all parties involved. Rebecca Sohotha, Subject Leader for Eco
nomics, Business and Enterprise at Rastrick School stated: ‘Our day at the University was fantastic, and the lecturers really opened our eyes to the wealth of job opportunities available within the supply chain and logistics fields. Young Fresh Connection proved to be a dynamic simulation that our students got their teeth into and were able to see the impact of their individual decision making on the success of their team outcomes.’
SCALA is in its 3rd year of running the Fresh Connection simulation in the UK and will kick off its annual competition in March 2012 with some of the biggest corporations across the UK. For more information on how to be involved as a company or school please contact Dean Starr on 01484 437497.
